The Admirals comeback attempt came up a little short on Thursday as they lost 5-4 on the road to the San Rafael Pacifics in the final game of the season’s first half.

Vallejo (15-24) trailed 4-1 in the top of the seventh but scored two runs in the inning to cut the lead to 4-3 thanks to a two-run single by Wilfredo Petit.

The Pacifics (21-18) got a huge insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, however, when Brent Gillespie hit his 10th homer of the year to make it 5-3. Gillespie had a team-leading three hits on the night.

Vallejo was down, but not out, as it scored a run in the top of the ninth to make it 5-4 when Admirals player/manager P.J. Phillips had an RBI groundout. Gerald Bautista was on second base with the tying run but Pacifics pitcher Clint Manzo got Petit to ground out to second to end the game. Manzo got the save for San Rafael while Patrick Conroy got the win. Conroy went six innings and gave up just five hits and one run.

Admirals starter Josh Evans went 5 and 1/3 innings and gave up 10 hits and four earned runs. He struck out seven and walked one.

Bautista had three hits for the Admirals, including an RBI single in the top of the third. Tim Williams had two hits for Vallejo and upped his batting average to .317.

Daniel Gonzalez had a two-run single for San Rafael in the sixth inning.

Vallejo begins a three-game homestand on Friday with Sonoma with game time slated for 6:30 p.m. at Wilson Park. Expected to start for Sonoma will be female pitcher Stacy Piagno.
