Admirals rally, come up short against Sonoma

VALLEJO, Calif. — Nick Akins Sr. and Graylin Derke homered for the Vallejo Admirals, but the rally came up short on Sunday at Wilson Park as the Sonoma Stompters pulled out a 9-7 win.

The Admirals came in to the game having won 14 of 16. They fell out of a tie for second place, a game behind the San Rafael Pacifics.

Sonoma jumped out to a 7-1 lead thanks to three home runs. Trailing 1-0 in the third, Pedro Barrios blasted a two-run homer to right to put the Stompers on top for good. Later in the inning, Brent Gillespie hit a solo shot to center to make it 3-1.

A run in the fourth and three in the fifth extended the lead to 7-1. Vallejo got two back in the bottom of the fifth on a run-scoring single by O’Koyea Dickson and a wild pitch that scored Akins.

Jacob Barfield blasted a two-run homer in the sixth to up the lead to 9-3.Akins hit a two-run homer in the seventh and Derke hit a two-run homer in the eight to get the Admirals close. But Ryan Richardson came on for his ninth save of the year, allowing a one-out single to Dickson but then striking out Akins and getting Tillman Pugh on a fly out to end it.

Jesse Remington (4-4) took the loss, going 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Nick Barnese (6-1) got the win, going five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
