The Vallejo Admirals led 4-0, then held on for a 4-3 win over the host Pittsburg Diamonds to open a three-game series at City Park.

Marquis Hutchinson (4-3) got the win with an outstanding seven-plus inning outing and Josh Evans earned the save by striking out the side in the ninth.

Vallejo scored first in the fourth when Joseph Hicks’ RBI single scored Darian Sandford. The Admirals took a 2-0 lead in the fifth on Alian Silva’s run-scoring single plated Lydell Moseby.

In the sixth, Hicks reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Wilfredo Petit’s RBI single and the Admirals scored their final run in the eighth when Sandford walked, stole second and third and scored on a fielder’s choice from Hicks. Sandford stole three bases in the game and has a league-leading 38.

Pittsburg’s John Contreras had a bases-loaded double in the eighth to make it 4-3 but Evans slammed the door in the ninth.

The Admirals (18-31 overall, 3-7 in the second half) continue the series with two more in Pittsburg and then host the Diamonds (25-24, 6-4) for three at Wilson Park starting on Friday.
