For the second day in a row the Pittsburg Diamonds used a two-out rally to keep the Admirals at arm’s length, and made sure a Vallejo rally in the ninth came up a run short.

Vallejo (16-28) trailed 5-0 and rallied for three in the sixth inning against Diamonds starter Clayton Tanner. Joseph Hicks doubled to lead off the inning, Cyle Figueroa singled and Gadiel Baez doubled to score Hicks and Figueroa. A Darian Sandford ground ball scored Baez for the third run.

The Admirals scored their other run in the ninth against Pittsburg closer Jeff Lyons as Sandford walked, stole second and scored on Gerald Bautista’s two-out single.

Pittsburg (22-22) led 1-0, then broke the game open with a four-run top of the sixth. Admirals starting pitcher Josh Evans (0-3) got the first two outs of the inning but then the Diamonds responded with six straight hits.

Ian Hagenmiller had an RBI double while Jordan Yallen, Rich Mejia and Nick Oddo had run-scoring singles.

Evans went 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned. He struck out three and walked three.

Tanner (1-0) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, all earned.

Oddo had three hits for the Diamonds. Figueroa was 2-for-3 while Baez and Bautista were both 2-for-4 for the Admirals. Sandford stole his league-leading 29th base.

The two teams conclude their three-game series on Thursday. The Admirals then hit the road for a six-game road trip starting Friday at San Rafael. Vallejo is back home on July 29.
